Fit For Business or Why Entrepreneurs Need Personal Training

If you are a business owner, you know that your to-do list is endless. Even when you try to prioritize important tasks over urgent, something unexpected comes up and you have to divert attention to deal with it.

Recently I was reminded, in a blog post by my colleague Tania from North Star Fitness, about the value of business owners investing in their own fitness. Continuing along the lines of her logic…

As an entrepreneur, your work involves making a lot of decisions. You have to make decisions on the direction of your business, decisions about staff, decisions about services or products, decisions on the client’s experience, and on and on.

You have to decide on the benefits or disadvantages before making an action plan, evaluate and analyze progress, and decide on whether to continue or change plans.

You also have to be mindful of work/life balance so that you can provide quality attention to both. There, that’s still another decision to make!

Whether you are a business owner, a stay-at-home parent, a manager, an academic, or a professional, it’s likely you understand that the burden of decision-making is exhausting. You might start out clear-headed and full of energy (or maybe not), and after dozens and dozens of decisions you get tired. This is called decision fatigue.

You probably already know that being fit and in shape would be a benefit to both your health and your effectiveness as an entrepreneur. It strengthens your body, relieves stress, increases stamina, and boosts your brain with clarity, focus, and creativity (exercise supports Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, or BDNF, a protein that supports growth, functioning and survival of brain cells). Oh, and it raises confidence too, because you will look and feel so much better!

If you own/run a business you need to be fit. You need to set aside time on your calendar for exercise so that it is on your schedule. And making exercise a non-negotiable isn’t merely setting you up for success in the boardroom and to operate with an edge over the competition, it’s also setting you up to be around to enjoy the fruits of your labor with those who are most important to you.

“Great!” You might be thinking. “But what do I do? I don’t have more time or expertise to figure out what would be the best way to get fit too.”

Having a personal trainer allows you to show up and work hard, without having to think too much, and without having to make yet another decision. The appointment is set, and you have to show up no matter what.

A trainer helps make the most out of your gym time. Getting fit doesn’t require hours on end because the trainer can focus in on what you need and not waste time on what you don’t need. You can get great results with a concentrated 60 minute session, three to four days per week. When you schedule with a personal trainer you don’t have to share the attention with other people in an exercise class.

Your trainer customizes your program to your goals. Your workout is dedicated to you every single time! Group exercise classes are most often focused on weight loss or getting in a good sweat. As much fun as they might be, they won’t get you to your goals as quickly as a customized program.

Sure. You might be able to be able to kludge together a trendy program that you need to teach yourself, plan and organize into action and then evaluate how it’s working every few weeks and then make necessary corrections (aka trial and error).

In addition to all the other stuff that you do.

Luckily, your trainer can do all of that for you. In far less time.
