I was almost 60 and I felt overweight and unfit with minor health concerns. I knew that I had to do something. Occasionally I had been creeping on SBS website to see if there were other people like me in their membership. I had never been to a gym in my life and naturally that worried me. Eventually I did make an appointment with Robin and that began my journey back to health and fitness. Of course, SBS is incredibly welcoming, inclusive and I need never had worried or thought my age or body condition was a barrier. I have gained so much in coming to the gym, many of those skills are obvious such as a level of fitness, strength, heathier body, nutritional awareness, all leading to great energy to get through my days. Many of the gains are a lot more subtle such as confidence, renewed interest in life and a desire to live a full life throughout my senior years. I plan for that to continue with the help of SBS. These days I am in Bev’s 6am sessions and enjoying the challenges.
On this journey I decided to enroll in a yoga teacher training course at Serene Yoga in Winnipeg, completed my 200 hours, completed and additional year of advanced teacher training and will continue to 500 hours certification starting this fall. I particularly enjoy teaching restorative yoga with longer held poses, accompanied by deep breathing, leading to opening tight areas in the body held in a relaxed atmosphere. I like teaching the very foundations of yoga so that poses are more easily attained, working towards effortlessness and stability in the poses. I never imagined that I would be in this place at 65. I feel I have greater power over the health of my body and autonomy over my own life. Deep gratitude to all at SBS. Ruth
