How to get started…

CONSISTENCY IS KING
Or, how to stop being consistently inconsistent (see what I did there?)

It’s no sweat. Really!

How many times have you tried to start working out at a new gym? Once, twice, a dozen? Maybe you walk in, look around, and try out a free workout or even a free week. In walking around the maze of machines and equipment, among people who seem to know what to do, perhaps you spot a treadmill or recumbent bike. They are familiar and you know you can get them going. It’s been quite a while though and maybe you feel a bit self-conscious even doing some cardio. You make it in for a few days and then something comes up or you oversleep, disrupting your brief routine. And then you notice the dreaded thought come to mind – do you even feel like exercising? Should you wait until you feel the motivation kick in?
Can you relate to this pattern? The starting-again hints at the unspoken truth….the stopping.
Start. Stop. Start. Stop.
Does the stopping seem to be more successful than the starting? Could there be a different way to go about it?

We often get asked by curious people who just want to know the prices or to try out a free workout. And if we were offering our members the exact same thing as other gyms these questions would make sense. Except we don’t see our gym as “just another gym.”
Our goal is to help you reach your goals. And that starts with taking some time to find out what those are. It might even take some digging in to discover deeper goals, priorities or motivations. Because few people walk into a gym and say “I want to physically work up a sweat for 150-180 minutes/week and lift somewhat heavy things on a consistent basis for 3-33 months.”

This type of goal is hard to connect with, which means it’s also hard to be consistent with it.

Usually we hear
“I need to lose 30 pounds”
“I want to feel comfortable in my own skin again”
“I want to have energy to keep up with my kids”
“I want to be able to pick up my 3 year old grandchild”
“I know I need to exercise but my knees are shot and I don’t know how to go about it”

We get to hear these goals during a brief consultation we affectionately call a “No-Sweat Intro” which is a smart little way to learn more about why you want to join a gym in the first place. Sure, getting to these goals may involve the physical activity described above. It may also involve making nutritional lifestyle changes or working with our dietitian. It may involve making supportive connections with peers and a coach. But it especially involves finding a way to help you make consistent effort toward those goals for as long as it takes. Because what you really want exists on the other side of consistently applied action.

We have found that taking the time to have this initial conversation helps us help you better than simply throwing you into a random sweat-fest without learning about your health history, physical limitations, and what you really (really) want to accomplish!

Nietzsche had said “he who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” Guess what, at some point the novelty will wear off and doing the fitness things will get monotonous. At some point you won’t feel like doing it. This is normal and it’s at these crucial times that connecting with your deeper motivations can help pull you through and take that necessary action. And consistent correct action wins.

When you schedule a No-Sweat Intro with one of our coaches you get to come in and take a peek at the gym and sit down in private with the coach who takes the time to learn about what you want to do or change. We ask about what has or has not worked for you in the past, and what would success look like for you in the future. We ask you to describe some of your current habits, and whether you have any injuries or other limitations. Our recommendations recognize that some people can take a more general way to get started and some people need more customization. Some members need more 1:1 private training along with the popular group fitness, some need direct nutrition guidance, and some need a combination of in-gym as well as at-home/online coaching. It all starts with getting to know you.

Have you found yourself caught in the start-stop loop (again) or found you’ve been stopped longer than you are happy with right now? Is today the day to make a change and try a different approach?

You can make that change by scheduling a free No-Sweat Intro with one of our Happy Gym SBS coaches right HERE

It is said that a coach is someone who makes you do what you don’t want to do, so you can be what you’ve always wanted to be.

Tell us, who or what do you want to be?
