Important or Urgent

“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” Nietzsche

Don’t feel like working out or eating healthier? Look in the mirror, that is the only person who will earn the benefit or loss if you don’t get past needing someone to talk you into it and sticking with it. And yes, there are people who rely on you being fit and healthy.

Your fitness is important, everyone will say that. But it is not urgent. And it won’t be urgent unless you make it so. Or until life does, and at that point it may become the only thing you can focus on and it will keep taking everything from you.

You can recognize someone who has made it urgent. That fitness has come at the expense of something else. Time, indulgence, money, immediate gratification. It feels like an imposition at the time but that is laziness trying to stay cozy under the covers.

I don’t have time.  Cut something out.

I don’t have money. Cut something out.

I deserve to comfort myself. That doesn’t really serve you, cut that thought out.

Seems unreasonable? Maybe, but it is that important, because here is the harsh truth: nobody else is coming to save you. You essentially are the castaway on an island, and while there may be outside factors that got you there that are absolutely not your fault, and it’s not at all fair, it is still up to you to do something about it. You are the only one who can fix it.

Most of what you have can be replaced. You only get one body. Training and nourishing that body brings valuable mental benefits in addition to the obvious physical benefits. It’s worth it to find the WHY and HOW.

Find out your WHY and make it outweigh everything else. Dig into that WHY and make it heavy enough so that when the laziness and comfort start chirping and cooing you can shut that down and bear the HOW of getting fit.

Make your WHY heavy, like your deadlifts should be.
